Video: Speed Camera Ticket Issued To Motionless Car

Daniel Doty was given a ticket for $40 when a Baltimore, MD speed camera clocked his Mazda wagon going 38 mph in a 25 mph zone. The problem? The wagon was clearly not moving when the speed camera captured it.

Two photos that were issued with the ticket clearly showed Doty idling at a traffic light, his brake lights illuminated. A 3-second video clip also showed the car sitting motionless as traffic moved by on a cross street, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Doty said that it was “shockingly obvious” that his car was not moving and he can’t understand how he could have possibly been issued a ticket. He has challenged the infraction and will appear in court on Friday.

This isn’t the first time speed cameras have made mistakes. The Baltimore Sun recently published an investigation that found speed cameras to routinely make errors, causing judges to often throw out tickets, wasting time and resources.

Lawmakers have since begun calling for new rules to govern the use of the speed cameras, which have generated $48 million of revenue since they were introduced three years ago, according to the Sun.
